Childhood

On August 4 in 1900, towards the end of the reign of Queen Victoria, the Honourable Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon made her entrance into the world as the daughter of Claude Bowes-Lyon, Lord of Glamis, and his wife Cecilia.

Born into a large and loving family, she was the ninth of 11 children.

On Elizabeth's 14th birthday, England and Germany went to war.
Glamis Castle was converted into a convalescent home for officers, and young Elizabeth became general factotum, walking the two miles to the village and back to post letters or shop for tobacco and sweets.

At the end of the war, 18-year-old Lady Elizabeth - her father had inherited the earldom upon the death of his father, meaning she too gained a title.

Royal wedding

Elizabeth met Prince Albert, Duke of York, King George V's second son, at a ball hosted by Lord and Lady Farquhar in Grosvenor Square.
She twice rejected his proposals of marriage because she was frightened of the restrictions that being a member of the Royal Family would place on her life.

On April 26, 1923, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon became the centre of attention for the million of people who crammed the capital, eager to view the first Westminster Abbey wedding in over 500 years.
This was the first wedding of a King's son at Westminster Abbey since Richard II married Anne of Bohemia in 1382.

In 1926 the couple celebrated the birth of their first child, Elizabeth, who would later become Queen Elizabeth II. Another daughter, Margaret Rose, was born four years later.

Elizabeth, Queen Consort

In 1936, She became the Queen Consort of George VI of the United Kingdom and North of Ireland .

During World War II, she supported the British public so much so that Adolf Hitler described her as "the most dangerous woman in Europe."

She became symbol of the nation's resistance because she refused to leave London even during the Blitz (the bombing of the United Kingdom by Nazi Germany between 7 September 1940 and 16 May 1941.)

She had an inimitable style, she always loved clothes.
She knew they were a vital part of royal display and her philosophy was simple:
" If you're going to play the part, you have to dress the part."
The Queen Mother adored fine materials and she couldn't resist them.
