Hello ! Hi there !

Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

1 – ABILITY - CAPACITY
A person has the CAPACITY to be a fine musician even lacking the ABILITY to play « Chopsticks » on the piano.
In other words , ability comes from making use of capacity.

2 - AFFLUENT – EFFLUENT
“Americans today are more AFFLUENT than ever.” “The river was polluted by EFFLUENT from a nearby chemical plant.”
Affluent is an adjective meaning prosperous. Effluent is a noun ; most often, it refers to wastes discharged from a manufacturing plant or a sewage-treatment facility.

3 – AMOUNT – NUMBER
A large NUMBER of dollars makes a large AMOUNT of money.
Amount is used when you cannot count the items to which you are referring, and when you are referring to singular nouns.
Number is used when you can count the items to which you are referring, and when you are referring to plural nouns.

4 – EAGER – ANXIOUS
I’m EAGER to finish typing this exercise, but I’m ANXIOUS about whether anyone will read it.
Eager means “enthusiastic, desirous” and denotes pleasant feelings. The primary meaning of anxious is “worried” ; it is an unpleasant sensation.
5 – BRING – TAKE
We BRING in the newspaper, but we TAKE out the trash. Well, sometimes !
Bring implies motion toward the speaker or writer ; take implies motion away from the speaker or writer.

6 – COMPARE TO – COMPARE WITH
A company’s profits for one year may be COMPARED WITH its profits for the previous year, but a lively child should be COMPARED TO a young colt.
Use “compare to” when discussing things that are dissimilar. Use “compare with” when discussing things of the same category.

7 – CONSIST IN – CONSIST OF
“The art of economics CONSISTS IN looking not merely at the immediate but at the longer effect of any act or policy”. “An infantry battalion CONSISTS OF three companies.”
Consist in introduces a definition or a discussion of identifying characteristics. Consist of introduces a discussion of components.

8 – CONTINUALLY – CONTINUOUSLY
The Great Wall of China runs CONTINOUSLY for 1,500 miles.
The telephone rang CONTINUALLY after we won the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes.
Continuous means “unbroken” ; “continual means “repetitive”.

9 – DISTINGUISH – DIFFERENTIATE
The man’s eyesight was so poor that he was unable to DISTINGUISH the sky from the water.
Scientists are able to DIFFERENTIATE among dozens of different species.
To distinguish is to perceive differences ; to differentiate is to point out differences.

10 – FOREBODING – FORBIDDING
She looked with FOREBODING on the FORBIDDING task of climbing Mount Everest.
A foreboding (noun) is a feeling or sense that something evil or ominius is about to happen. Forbidding (adjective) means “grim, difficult, dangerous, menacing”.

11 – HISTORIC – HISTORICAL
The Magna Carta is perhaps the world’s most precious HISTORIC document.
Artefacts from the Civil War are of HISTORICAL significance, but they have little monetary value.
The distinction here is fine but worth making. Historic should be reseved for places, things, and events of great significance. Historical refers to history, often in the sense of a particular period of history, or to history as a subject.

12 – PRECIPITOUS – PRECIPITATE
The horse made a PRECIPITATE dash down the PRECIPITOUS hill.
Precipitate means “sudden, rash, unwise”. Precipituous means “very steep”.

13 – STIMULANT – STIMULUS
Coffe is a STIMULANT that temporarily increases some bodily functions. A tax cut is a STIMULUS to business.
A stimulant produces a short-term effect ; a stimulus is longer lasting.

14 – TURBID – TURGID
The child’s belly was TURGID from malnutrition. The old man’s eyes were TURBID as a result of cataracts.
Turgid means “swollen” ; turbid means “cloudy or muddy”.

A très vite, mes amis, et bravo Bye ! , même si j'aurais bien dû me douter que ce vocabulaire était un peu trop facile pour vous Evil or Very Mad

Sad
