'The' : quand il renvoie à une situation particulière :
Nous allons rencontrer the dans un certains nombre de situations connues de tous, notamment quand il s'agit d'éléments uniques.

• The renvoie à un élément qui a déjà été repéré :

• Titres :

- the Pope, the President, the Prime Minister, the Queen, etc.
- sauf lorsque le nom de la personne est mentionné : Queen Elizabeth, President Lincoln, Pope John Paul, Chancelor Schroeder, Prince Harry, Saint Joan of Arc.

• Exceptions avec 'the + titre + nom personnel = The Emperor Hadrian, the Emperor Trajan, the Emperor Napoleon, the Ayatollah Khomeini, the Reverend Ian Paisley.
• Environment : Il peut s'agir de l'environnement immédiat, domestique ou de l'environnement en général.

- the door, the living-room, the ceiling, the cellar, the floor, the light
- the bank, the post-office, the station, the bus station
- the environment, the world, the sun, the North Pole, the Moon, the equator, the Earth, the sky, the cosmos, the solar system, the universe

• Exceptions : what on earth ! ( = que diable ! ), come back to earth ( revenir sur terre ), come down to earth ( revenir sur terre )

• Fonctions uniques : On emploie the si cette fonction est déjà repérée ou si le nom est suivi d'un complément.

the doctor, the baker, the butcher ( of the town = sous-entendu )..., the + president ( of a country ), the Queen / the President ( of the USA ), the headmaster ( of the school ), the doctor ( of the village ), the vicar, the town, etc.

She is head of the Church /  Head of the Church = Elle est à la tête de l' Eglise.
She's Queen of England / She's the Queen of England = Elle est Reine d' Angleterre / C'est la Reine d' Angleterre.
Long live the Queen ! = Vive la Reine !
