Rappel : Dans cette première partie nous traitons du 'the' spécifique, qui renvoie à une situation particulière. Dans la leçon précédente nous avons vu 'the' quand il renvoie à un élément déjà repéré. Cette fois, il s'agit du 'the' spécifique défini par ce qui suit.

' The ' est défini par ce qui suit.
Le nom précédé par 'the' peut être déterminé par plusieurs éléments du contexte.
Une proposition relative ( 'effacée' ou non )
  1. The bomb that exploded killed thousands of  innocent people.
  2. Can you lend me the pen (=>  the one ) you showed me yesterday ? => Can you show me the pen that you showed me yesterday ?

Un superlatif
  • She is the tallest girl I have ever seen.
Un complément avec in / of / at / between
  • The deep blue of the sea
  • The history of  China
  • The woman at the back
  • The war between the States ( = la guerre de Sécession)
Noms attributs en apposition
  • He is the manager of  the factory.
  •  His wife, / the daughter of a famous television actor, / is also a top lawyer.
Certains noms propres peuvent prendre l'article 'the'. C'est le cas des noms de famille au pluriel.
  • the Kennedy family = the Kennedys
  • the Royal Family = the Royals
  • the Chelton family = the Cheltons
